With the NBA Draft around the corner, ESPN has released its latest mock draft, which sees the Milwaukee Bucks make an intriguing move by drafting 6-foot-8 guard Micah Peavy out of Georgetown.
The draft allows the Bucks to bring in a player with the 47th pick who can help the team right away. In recent years, we have seen them make bold selections on prospects that haven't paid off.
AJ Johnson was a shock selection in the first round of last year's draft, before being shipped off to Washington as part of the Kyle Kuzma trade. In 2023, Andre Jackson Jr. and Chris Livingston looked like solid picks in the second round, but neither has made a real impression on the roster.
College experience is what the Milwaukee Bucks need. Micah Peavy gives them that and would be a selection that suits their needs.
Micah Peavy could be a sneaky pickup at 47 for the Bucks
Damian Lillard's injury and a number of guards possibly leaving in free agency have the Bucks looking light in the backcourt. Milwaukee would like to keep Gary Trent Jr. as he had a stellar season on a minimum deal, while Kevin Porter Jr. is rumored to be declining his player option and hitting the open market. Drafting Peavy can help them fill some roster holes.
This season at Georgetown, he played and started all 32 games, averaging 37.1 minutes, 17.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.3 steals on shooting splits of .481/.400/.659. The senior is an elite on-ball defender and, with his frame, is able to guard at multiple positions, something the Bucks lacked for a lot of the 2024-25 season. His 2.3 steals per game show his ability to create turnovers, whether that be on-ball or jumping passing lines and timing the steal at the right time.
On offense, his shooting took a massive jump this year from 31 percent from deep at TCU in the 2023-24 season. Whether that is an outlier or not is up for debate, but he did make 40.5 percent of his catch-and-shoot threes and 40 percent off the dribble.
His mid-range pull-up is solid, giving the Bucks another scorer who would take pressure and attention away from Giannis Antetokounmpo. Peavy's timing is also good on offense, judging when to make smart cuts, and he has a big enough body to fight through contact with bigger players to make layups.
If Milwaukee were to draft Peavy, it would be unlikely he would be asked to create his shots off the dribble, but as a 3-and-D guard and wing, he would be a really smart addition. Pat Connaughton has unsurprisingly opted into his player option, now making him a viable trade candidate. A trade could open the door for Peavy to be an option off the bench that brings defense and energy, as well as the ability to put points on the board.
There are so many holes that the Bucks need to fix on this roster, meaning at 47, they could go in any direction. One thing to note with Peavy is that, per HoopsHype, the Bucks didn't work him out - at least not yet - so they may not be interested. With the draft, you never know.
