Marc Stein of The Stein Line reports that the Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo have not made any progress toward a decision regarding the superstar's future with the franchise, and that is very frustrating news for fans of the team.
"There were no apparent breakthrough developments last week for the many factions around the league hoping for a firm indication about Giannis Antetokounmpo's future in Milwaukee," Stein wrote.
"Antetokounmpo himself has been very active on Twitter in terms of answering fans' questions over the past several days, but he has not formally pushed to be traded away from the only NBA team he has ever known in the wake of Milwaukee's third successive first-round exit."
At this point, Bucks fans should be frothing at the mouth for news of Antetokounmpo's future.
Why is the Giannis decision dragging on so long?
Taking a step back from the emotions of the situation, it makes sense why Antetokounmpo and the Bucks are taking their time with this decision. It's a franchise-altering choice that will also change the course of Antetokounmpo's entire career. Neither party wants to rush into a decision.
On the one hand, Milwaukee needs to figure out what it feels is best for the organization. Is it worth it to keep trying to retool around Antetokounmpo, especially with Damian Lillard's injury? Or should they enter a rebuild, despite not having their own future picks?
Meanwhile, what should Antetokounmpo want to do? Staying in the East would give him a better chance to compete deep into the playoffs, but the roster in Milwaukee isn't great, and there aren't many pathways to get better.
It's a tricky spot for both sides.
Bucks fans should still be frustrated
Two things can be true: It makes sense for this decision to take a long time, but frustration is also valid.
Living in a state of uncertainty is never fun. And for Bucks fans who have watched the organization make some questionable moves around Antetokounmpo for the past few years, leading to three straight first-round exits, it's getting to the point of unbearable.
The Lillard trade hasn't panned out so far, Doc Rivers hasn't worked out perfectly as head coach, and the Kyle Kuzma move didn't look great down the stretch of the season. It's been imperfect decision after imperfect decision for years now.
So, while it makes sense for Antetokounmpo and the Bucks to take their time with this choice, it also makes sense for fans to want answers. Either give something to look forward to with Antetokounmpo or rip the band-aid off. Just pick a side.
