The Milwaukee Bucks should be the favorites to sign Malcolm Brogdon after Chris Paul committed to returning to the Clippers. Brogdon spent his first three NBA seasons in Milwaukee, including winning Rookie of the Year in 2017. There was a contentious split between the two sides in 2019, but the Bucks have a massive hole at point guard right now. If Brogdon wants a significant role, Milwaukee is the new best fit.
Giannis Antetokounmpo appears locked in with the Bucks and will be forced to play a point forward role. Kevin Porter Jr. and Cole Anthony are the only point guards on their roster after Damian Lillard’s stunning departure. The Bucks can’t be a serious title contender with their current point guard room.
Milwaukee would need to open up a roster spot to sign Malcolm Brogdon, and there are serious questions about his health. Still, Brogdon is a veteran who produces when on the floor. With the Bucks all-in on winning, they should sign the veteran.
Bucks gifted Malcolm Brogdon by Chris Paul's signing
The Bucks were rumored to be interested in CP3, but he wanted to be close to his family after playing last season in San Antonio. Paul is back with the Clippers and will play behind James Harden. That leaves Malcolm Brogdon and Russell Westbrook as the best available free agent ball-handlers.
The Bucks have not been shy about remaking their roster. The already cut Lillard to sign Myles Turner. It would not be out of the question for Jon Horst to pull off a trade to open a roster spot. Milwaukee has a clear need.
Brogdon has played only 63 games in the last two seasons combined due to injuries. The 32-year-old averaged 14.6 points, 5.0 assists, and 3.8 rebounds in 26.7 minutes per contest, though. The Bucks could certainly use that production in the backcourt. Anthony is more of a score-first option, and Brogdon could set the table for others to feast.
This likely comes down to what Giannis wants. Does the Greek Freak think the Bucks need another playmaker to be a contender? If not, Milwaukee may roll with their current roster. The franchise was interested in Chris Paul and Bradley Beal. Is Brogdon enough to move the needle? He should be. It would be a bet on his health, which is a dangerous gamble. The Bucks are no strangers to making those.
The Milwaukee Bucks need to be competitive. It doesn’t matter what their roster looks like on paper. If they are not winning, the Giannis rumors will ramp back up. Malcolm Brogdon could help them avoid those rumblings, and Jon Horst should find a way to make it happen.
