Myles Turner's first year with the Milwaukee Bucks didn't go according to plan, but that doesn't mean he's ready to jump ship immediately. In an interview with The Athletic and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (subscription required) before the regular season's conclusion, the big man reflected on the season and claimed he tends to honor his four-year commitment with the team.
Turner plans on sticking around in Milwaukee
Initially, some thought that moving to Milwaukee could be the type of transition that would elevate Turner to true second-option status. Instead, he was stuffed in the backseat most nights, playing the least significant role of his career since his rookie year back in 2015-16. Doc Rivers often favored Bobby Portis and Jericho Sims over him.
While Rivers certainly played a part in not getting the best out of Turner, the big man wouldn't put all of the blame on his now former head coach. Turner admitted that there were many occasions when he should have looked inward and been more aggressive. Even then, Turner admitted that his role had a lot more "standing around" than he was used to with the Indiana Pacers.
The potential is still there for Turner to be a success. The sweet perimeter shooting and formidable defensive presence that captivated the Bucks so much that they cut Damian Lillard to sign him did not just vanish overnight. A new coach, an uptick in aggressiveness, and some roster tweaks might be exactly what Turner needs to be on the right track.
Now, how do the Bucks feel about Turner?
The Milwaukee Bucks should want to keep Turner, given how much they sacrificed to get him, but as the big man alluded to, this team doesn't have a direction right now. How things go with Turner could come down to what happens with Giannis Antetokounmpo. After all, trying to keep Giannis was the reason the front office went out and got him in the first place.
If the Bucks keep Giannis, Turner will probably stay as the team looks to forge a contender next year. If the forward leaves, Turner could be out the door soon after. Even after his down year, Turner would be a valuable addition to plenty of teams. The right contender that feels like they are one piece away could be willing to make Turner their swing for the fences move.
No matter what, it's clear that Turner is currently committed to the Milwaukee Bucks.
