"I'm back." Those are the two words Thanasis Antetokounmpo used to signal that he has healed from a torn Achilles that took his entire 2024-25 NBA season. At 32, the former Milwaukee Bucks forward's time in the association may not be over yet. The big question is whether or not the Bucks may bring back the tradition of signing him year after year or turn the page on that chapter for good.
Don't be surprised if the Bucks sign Thanasis
Prior to this past season, Thanasis had been on the roster for five consecutive seasons. He never played a prominent role, but he was undoubtedly an energetic presence who always gave those around him a shot in the arm when they needed it. Former Buck Patrick Beverley is on the record saying Thanasis is "one of the greatest teammates" he's had.
Everyone knows how important Thanasis is to Giannis, too. When they were teammates, Thanasis oftentimes was the one hyping his brother up on the sidelines and calming him down when it was needed. The bond they have is undeniable. Even though he couldn't play this past season, Thanasis was still close by, often sitting courtside at home games to support his brother and the team.
If the Milwaukee Bucks get the all-clear that Giannis Antetokounmpo will be back in town next year, bringing back Thanasis will absolutely be back on the table. They only didn't do it last season due to him tearing his Achilles in the offseason. Now healthy, there's a chance they bring him back to resume his usual duties from the prior five seasons.
Signing a 32-year-old coming off an Achilles tear might not seem ideal due to Milwaukee's need for youth, athleticism, and healthy bodies, especially in Damian Lillard's absence. For most others, that would make sense, but this is Thanasis Antetokounmpo. His impact on his teammates, especially his younger brother, goes deeper than what he produces statistically.
Time will tell how the Milwaukee Bucks decide to tackle the situation this offseason. The Bucks have never been shy about having sets of brothers on the roster, and that likely won't change this summer, but with all of the other needs they must address, there is no telling. However, there's no denying that if they do sign him, Thanasis will continue to be one of the more valuable 15th men in the NBA.
