Milwaukee’s latest shuffled starting lineup against Boston saw Ousmane Dieng step into a starting role alongside Giannis, Kevin Porter Jr., AJ Green, and Myles Turner. Dieng quietly delivered exactly what this roster desperately needs: spacing, defense, mobility, and real positional size alongside Antetokounmpo.

Dieng is the missing peice to the Bucks starting lineup

For much of the year, it has been apparent that this version of the Milwaukee Bucks needs a true small forward who defends the opposing team's best player and provides the spacing this team needs to operate offensively. Numerous failed attempts at starting players like AJ Green and Kyle Kuzma out of position have resulted in those players being hunted on defense and the offense looking clunky.

The trade to acquire Ousmane Dieng has thus far solved that issue. Dieng scored 13 points in a game in which the Bucks were dominated 108–81, but his fit and production were a silver lining. From the opening tip, the Bucks forward was proactive, knocking down shots early and providing the Bucks with a credible perimeter threat on both ends that Giannis can operate around.

Dieng already enjoyed one of the most impressive single-game outings of his young career just weeks ago, posting a 19-point, 11-rebound, six-assist line against his former team, the Oklahoma City Thunder. If Dieng can consistently play as he did in that matchup with Giannis now in the lineup, the Bucks might have really found something in what was initially looked at as a throwaway trade.

The key to Dieng's fit is his shooting. He is at 41.4 percent on the season and 38 percent from the 3-point line. For any player looking to fit alongside a gravitational force like Giannis Antetekounmpo you have to be able to knock down open shots. Not only can Dieng do just that, but his size allows him to create his own shot and get it off promptly if needed.

Dieng provides much-needed stability. Since the trade involving Khris Middleton, the small forward position has been a revolving door. A player with Dieng’s size and skill profile naturally fits that position for a team that desperately needs defensive help on the perimeter and consistent production on the offensive end.

That doesn’t mean everything is perfect. The Bucks still lost convincingly, and Milwaukee’s overall offensive cohesion remains a work in progress. But what Dieng provided is space, defensive versatility, and noticeable shot-making. The next step will be consistency. But on this night, where there wasn't much to be excited about, Ousmane Dieng stood out.
