It was clear last season that the Detroit Pistons needed another shot creator to complement All-Star Cade Cunningham. They responded by letting bucket-getter Tobias Harris walk. In their first game of the new NBA season, they were unsurprisingly hindered by a lack of creation offensively. They should already be on the phone with former Milwaukee Bucks guard Kevin Porter Jr.
Porter would fit seamlessly in Detroit
The Pistons simply don't have enough shot creators around Cunningham. Jalen Duren is an All-Star but does all his damage at the rim. Opponents will give Ausar Thompson all the space he wants until he sets foot in the paint. Duncan Robinson is a pure shooter. John Collins is a... You get the point. The Pistons need a bucket-getter to take pressure off Cunningham, and Porter is just that.
Last season with the Milwaukee Bucks, Porter averaged 17.4 points and 7.4 assists, showing that he can create his own shot but also get his teammates involved. Just like he was seemingly poised to do with the Bucks before his shocking departure, Porter could command Detroit's second unit and hold things down while the primary guard is catching their breath, keeping the offense afloat.
Porter might not be the player who can help Detroit get over the hump, but given their current woes, he feels like a no-brainer addition at some point.
Porter may be sought after on the market
While the Pistons are a logical suitor for Porter, they won't be alone. Plenty of teams that feel like they are a bench piece away from making some noise should be eyeing the guard. It's unfortunate for him that the Milwaukee Bucks cut him on the eve of the season, as very few teams have the resources to sign him right now, but in due time, his phone will ring.
For now, Porter will likely have to remain patient. The season literally just started. Teams will want to get a closer look at their rosters before they make any major decisions. However, once December inches closer, identities of teams will start to become clearer. If someone is in the market for another shot-creating guard, Porter will likely be near the top of their wish list.
The Pistons won their season opener against the Boston Celtics, but they should not expect Javonte Green to score 19 bench points every night. Porter could be the spark they need this year.
