Brook Lopez

The Milwaukee Bucks had two routes to go down this offseason. First, they could have traded away Brook Lopez and made the drop-scheme defense a thing of the past. Second, they could have kept Lopez and brought in more perimeter defenders to make his job in that particular defensive scheme much easier. They opted to go with the second.

In year's past, the Bucks were one of the NBA's most formidable defenses due to Lopez's protection of the paint, which worked so well because of the perimeter defenders the team surrounded him with. Players like Jrue Holiday, Wesley Matthews, P.J. Tucker and others could provide resistance on the perimeter to slow them down as they went to the rim, where Lopez would be there waiting.

With a lack of reliable perimeter defenders on the roster last season, driving to the hoop was like a turnstile for opponents. That made Lopez's job much more difficult, as he didn't have the same time to put himself in position. Lopez isn't perfect defensively, but the roster construction made it much more difficult to be as impactful as he had been in recent years.

The addition of Wright should make Lopez's job much easier when the Milwaukee Bucks roll with the drop defense. The ever-versatile Wright can provide much-needed resistance on the perimeter and give Lopez the time he needs to get into position to swat shots. Wright, along with other newcomers, should help balance out the Milwaukee Bucks' defense.
