5 Rookies the Bucks will regret not drafting after summer league
By Tyler Watts
2. Johnny Furphy
Many projected Furphy to be a first-round draft pick, but he fell to 35th overall before the Pacers jumped up to select him. The 6’8 wing struggled in his lone college season, but still shot over 35 percent from 3-point range and showcased significant potential.
The 19-year-old looked improved in summer league. He struggled with his efficiency but averaged 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.8 steals in 29.0 minutes per game. Shooting will be Furphy’s swing skill. His jumper looked strong in Vegas, despite making just 10 of his 35 triples.
Finding a 6’8 wing with his athletic ability and motor is not easy. Furphy was getting buckets at the rim and displaying his potential in his first competition with the Pacers.
There are defensive questions and his playmaking is virtually non-existent. Furphy profiles mostly as a floor spacer with plus size. Improving his defense and rounding out his game should be the focus. Furphy has the potential to be a starter for a decade-plus, and his ceiling is higher than AJ Johnson’s.
Johnny Furphy was not the only projected first-round pick to slip in the draft, and this big man also made several teams regret not selecting him during summer league.
