3 Positives, 2 negatives from AJ Johnson's Summer League debut with Bucks

The rookie put plenty of his game on display.

Negative - Shooting

With all of that said, his poor shooting needs to be addressed, too. Johnson was efficient at the rim, but he was cold from three, shooting a poor 2-of-9 from deep. The thing is, it might be way too soon to judge this part of Johnson's game.

He shot 27.8 percent from the perimeter last year in Australia, but that could still be a small sample size. He only played eight minutes per night and averaged 1.2 attempts per game, so it's hard to tell how accurate that percentage is. This was the first time we could see him shooting at a high volume, so even if it was rough, it's not necessarily representative of his game.

In fact, his shot didn't look bad at all, and some of his misses were pretty close. Most importantly, he did look confident in his shot, which, again, is what you want to see even if they're not falling. It was a dud this game, but this is an area of his game where he could show some improvement soon.

Negative - Half-court creation

Johnson's biggest problems came in the second half when he wasn't able to run the open court and play at such a fast pace.

The Bulls picked him up higher and made a point to take him out of his rhythm, which made him struggle when he tried to run the offense. He wasn't really able to create that many chances after the break, either for himself or his teammates, and his only bucket was a transition 3-pointer at the end of the fourth quarter.

Again, we'd be talking about it in a completely different way if the shots were falling, so we need to see how things go in the near future, but it was clear he struggled to find his way back into the game. This was the area where Johnson did look a bit immature because he wasn't able to adjust when the game changed. Still, this is something that can be expected in a young guard's first Summer League game.

If he keeps his willingness up, Johnson will learn from these kinds of mistakes and develop the tools he needs.

Overall, it felt like a good first touch for him. Let's see if he can keep it up and have an even better second experience in the Bucks jersey.
