Gary Trent Jr. - Becoming a better 3-point shooter

It shouldn't be a shocking statement that the Milwaukee Bucks starting shooting guard is going to be Gary Trent Jr. Yes, AJ Green made some great strides last season and even got some playoff minutes and yes, it's fun to imagine starting lineups with Khris Middleton at the two spot, but Gary Trent Jr. is the starter here.

Figuring out what Gary Trent Jr. can teach Tyler Smith about playing in the NBA is pretty simple; it's the skill he's most known for, 3-point shooting.

As previously mentioned, Tyler Smith was a respectable 3-point shooter at the G-League level. Gary Trent Jr. is one of the best shooters at the NBA level. Trent could have literally chosen any team in the NBA and been welcomed in with open arms due to his skill set, but he chose the Milwaukee Bucks.

Gary Trent Jr. is a career 38.6 percent 3-point shooter and had the second-best 3-point percentage season of his six-year career in 2023-24 at 39.3 percent. Trent also shot 43.1 percent on catch-and-shoot opportunities with a 64.2 effective field goal percentage, something Tyler Smith could find himself doing often playing alongside ball-dominant players like Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Gary Trent Jr. was also the NBA's 3-point percentage leader on wide-open looks for players who attempted more than 100 open 3-pointers. Again, that is something Tyler Smith could find himself in a position to do if he plays alongside Giannis and Lillard. Opposing defenses would rather Smith spot up to shoot than give the Milwaukee Bucks superstars one less body to have to face.
