Preseason standout earns promotion with Bucks after shakeup at center spot
By Dalton Sell
Ahead of training camp, the Milwaukee Bucks added Liam Robbins via an Exhibit 10 deal, giving him a chance to prove himself and earn a spot on their G-League squad after the preseason.
Robbins took full advantage. While he didn't play significant minutes in the preseason outside of the final outing, where he started, the 7-foot big man made the most of his 11.7 minutes per matchup. In those minutes, he averaged four points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. Though those might not be game-changing numbers, the potential was still on full display.
Milwaukee's front office clearly liked what they saw, as ESPN insider Shams Charania reports that the team is signing Robbins to a two-way deal, waiving Anžejs Pasečņiks to make room.
What Liam Robbins brings to the Milwaukee Bucks
While the sample size was undoubtedly limited, Robbins showed glimpses of promise during his first legitimate action against NBA action. Offensively, the 7-foot, 250-pound big man utilized his frame to attack the hoop, but he also wasn't afraid to show his range with a few jumpers. Defensively, his 1.5 blocks per game tell the story, as his rim protection was strong, sending shots away regularly.
Of course, floor-spacing and shot-blocking are two major attributes the Milwaukee Bucks are always looking for at the center spot. Brook Lopez reignited his NBA career in Milwaukee due to his ability to do both, and with him nearing 37, there's no telling how much longer he will play. Even if it is through smaller signings like this, finding players of a similar archetype as possible long-terms fits is wise.
As a two-way player, Robbins likely won't see prominent minutes with the Bucks this coming season. Instead, most of his time will likely be spent with the Wisconsin Herd in the G-League, where he will get good reps to work on his game. In time, if he impresses, perhaps he could make his way onto a Milwaukee Bucks roster that is always looking for more reliable depth at the center spot.
In addition to simply being thrilled with the promotion, the fact that Robbins is a Wisconsin native - having been born in Waukesha - likely makes this all the more special for the 25-year-old.
It will be fascinating to keep an eye on the two-way big man throughout the 2024-25 NBA season as he aims to carve out a name for himself.
