Despite preseason surge, Bucks should have no regrets on Brook Lopez decision

Brook Lopez has been productive in the preseason for the Clippers, but the Bucks shouldn't have any remorse about letting him walk in free agency. Milwaukee has a better option at center now with Myles Turner, who can provide the same positives as Lopez but also brings more youth and athleticism. Turner fits into the team's strategy for this season much better than Lopez can.

Brook Lopez doesn't fit with the Bucks roster

The Bucks have already shown in preseason that their recipe for success will be predicated on getting up and down the floor quickly and launching threes. Lopez is a solid option for getting a lot of threes up (last season, he averaged about five attempts per game), but he's a very slow and plodding player. Especially at age 37, Lopez doesn't have the speed and athletic ability to keep up with the Bucks' young guards.

With younger players surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks are at their best when they attack in transition. Giannis himself is a deadly fast-break scorer, and the rest of the Bucks have potent shooting in transition, which can complement the fast-break even more.

Although Lopez can feed into the fast-break with his shot-blocking and rim contests on defense, Myles Turner perfectly replaces that role while still being able to keep up on the fastbreak. Both Lopez and Turner have averaged a little over two blocks per game over the last three seasons.

Turner also adds increased versatility on defense because he can switch out onto perimeter players a lot better than the slow-footed Lopez. The Milwaukee Bucks don't necessarily have a lockdown perimeter defender this season, so they may require their bigs to step out more often.

Brook Lopez's preseason surge is also affected by his new team and role. He fits the Clippers well as a backup center who plays in a similar style to starter Ivica Zubac, but with more of a 3-point shot. The LA Clippers already have a system in place that suits a slower drop coverage center, and have the perimeter playmakers to get him the ball in advantageous positions.

Ultimately, the separation between Lopez and the Bucks will probably be beneficial for both sides. Lopez is too old and slow to play the fast style that the Bucks want, where they will look to force turnovers and get out running. And Lopez himself will be better off in Los Angeles on an older team that fits him and allows him to play the backup role that suits him better at this point in his career.
