The best thing for Tyler Herro would be playing next to a defensive-minded guard who has it in him to play off the ball. That makes the Milwaukee Bucks' rumored interest in Herro, as reported by insider Jake Fischer (subscription required), all the more understandable. With Ryan Rollins in town, they may have an opportunity to give Herro exactly what he needs.
A Rollins-Herro backcourt could complement each other
Herro isn't a good defender; that is far from controversial to say. As the New York Knicks just showed with Jalen Brunson, the best way to have success while one of your primary contributors is far from a stout defender is by surrounding him with pieces who can hide his flaws on that end. It would require more than just Rollins, but he would be a nice starting point right out of the gates.
Rollins, who should firmly remain in Milwaukee's plans even if they trade Giannis Antetokounmpo and land Tyler Herro, is a rapidly rising defender. Though he didn't get recognized for it by national media, there were stretches when Rollins played like an All-Defensive guard. As his 24th birthday nears, the guard has plenty of time to keep growing in that regard.
As for offensively, Rollins can handle things on his own, but he's also not afraid to let a fellow guard handle things while he plays off the ball. Whether he's constantly cutting or serving as a catch and shoot perimeter threat—he shot 41.3 percent on his catch and shoot triple tries this past season—Rollins doesn't need the ball in his hands constantly to get things done.
He's the type of player that could make the Milwaukee Bucks think a little harder about bringing in a controversial piece like Herro.
Bucks' backcourt could become a strength
If the Milwaukee Bucks trade Giannis Antetokounmpo, it will take some time for them to be back in the contending picture again. However, if they go through with it and start fresh, their backcourt could be one of the strongest parts of their roster in a hurry, depending on how they tackle the next several weeks.
Rollins and Herro could be a strong one-two punch as the starters. Set to be armed with at least the 10th pick—and likely more—in this draft, the Bucks have a chance to add an impact guard or two in the coming days. If they find a way to bring in Mikel Brown Jr., Darius Acuff Jr., Keaton Wagler, or any of the other high-end guards, that's an eye-catching trio on the payroll.
All of that goes without even mentioning what will happen with Kevin Porter Jr., who could further bolster things for Milwaukee if he returns next season.
Before thinking too far ahead, the Bucks must decide what happens with Giannis Antetokounmpo.
