Jaime Jaquez Jr. has shown plenty of growth through his first three NBA seasons, and now, his coach wants to see even more. Speaking to the media, Milwaukee Bucks Coach Taylor Jenkins didn't mince words about wanting to see Jaquez take a step forward defensively this season. If the forward can be a serviceable defender, it makes him that much more valuable to the team.

"He and I have had great conversations about wanting to take the next step defensively. He's, obviously, in the first three matchups, taken some difficult matchups, and had some good moments and had some learning moments, too. So, regardless of where he ends up, starting, coming off the bench, I think he can make a significant impact for us, but I really want him to take that next step for us defensively."

Jaquez has the tools to succeed defensively

Defense has always been a weak point for the forward. While he's shown flashes of being able to take on the tough forward matchups, his lack of athleticism has always hindered him to some degree. Yet, athletic ability alone isn't what makes someone a good defender. This is still a 6-foot-6, 225 lb sturdy forward who has the frame and IQ to battle with other bulky bodies.

In Miami, Jaquez was typically not tasked with taking on the opposing team's top forward from the opening tip of games. However, he was a reserve throughout his Heat tenure. Starting in all three of his Bucks preseason games, it feels safe to say he will be with the first five in the regular season, and with that comes more responsibility on both ends.

When forwards like Jaylen Brown, Jalen Williams, or Paul George come to town, Jaquez will likely get the assignment right away. It adds more pressure on him, as that will be uncharted territory for him. If he embraces the opportunity and puts his best foot forward defensively, serving as a disruptor and holding his own, it can push him to new heights in Milwaukee and also elevate the team.

Defense could work wonders in contract talks

Jaquez is eligible for a contract extension before the season, and all signs point to the team holding off on anything for the time being. It makes sense. They likely want to get a good look at what he can bring to the table before committing to him long-term. That could also work out for Jaquez, who will be poised to have a career year if he is a first-time full-time starter.

If Jaquez puts up career highs offensively while also taking strides defensively, he could blow current extension projections out of the water. It would be a win-win for both sides, giving the Bucks their new small forward of the future after spending the last couple of seasons sifting through options. It is all easier said than done, but Jaquez must take Jenkins' challenge to heart.
