Now that the dust has settled and Giannis Antetokounmpo has been traded to the Miami Heat (along with Bobby Portis), the Boston Celtics are left with a star player who was publicly offered in a trade. They now must figure out if they can put the genie back in the bottle or find Jaylen Brown another home in the near future.
The Bucks hurt the Celtics in more ways than one by taking Miami's offer
Milwaukee choosing the package of Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks (including No. 13 in this year's draft), a pick swap, and a second-rounder over Boston's alleged offer of Jaylen Brown plus picks will have real ramifications across the league.
Brian Windhorst of ESPN said on Get Up that teams are gearing up for a bidding war for Jaylen Brown in the wake of the Giannis trade to Miami. It is hard to believe that Boston can salvage the relationship that has been on rocky ground with Brown's comments since the end of last season, especially now that he is aware of Boston's intention to include him in a deal for Antetokounmpo.
If a trade were to happen, losing Brown would be a heavy blow to Boston fans who have come to love the duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown since they carried the franchise to a title back in 2024. Similar to what we are seeing in Milwaukee, Boston is headed toward the end of an era in the coming weeks and months.
Celtics suddenly have a massive choice to make this summer
What Boston could actually do in a trade for Jaylen Brown is up in the air. Plenty of teams would love to get their hands on Brown, who was a Finals MVP just a few short years ago, but the Celtics have to fully put him on the market first.
This swing and miss by the Celtics on Antetokounmpo unleashed a problem heading into next season. Can Boston convince Brown to come back and play for a team that publicly and actively tried to trade him? That seems like an unlikely scenario, but crazier things have happened.
For Milwaukee Bucks fans, losing Giannis is going to hurt, and the team is likely going to struggle for the foreseeable future. At least fans can take solace in choosing Miami's offer over Boston's, which makes things (at least in the short term) more difficult for their rival.
