Unlikely Bucks reunion cannot be ruled out until Giannis signs extension

While it's unlikely, Damian Lillard showed that some bridges can be rebuilt.

Just like everyone did throughout his time with the Milwaukee Bucks, people are already speculating about Giannis Antetokounmpo's future with the Miami Heat. On a new episode of FanDuel TV's Run it Back, former Buck and Giannis teammate DeMarcus Cousins said he sees a scenario in which the Greek Freak returns to Milwaukee after the season. Until Giannis signs an extension, it's possible.

First and foremost, this is unlikely

It's unlikely that the Miami Heat sold their entire future to acquire a one-year rental. They likely got at least some form of certainty that he would sign an extension before selling the farm to Milwaukee in the summer blockbuster. Yet, that's just speculation. Maybe this is a Kawhi Leonard situation where he spends one year with his new squad and then leaves. Nothing is in writing as of now.

Giannis has been extension-eligible since October 1, but him not signing it should not have Heat fans panicking just yet. If the power forward signed the dotted line now, he would miss out on millions that he becomes eligible for next offseason. It makes sense for him to hold off, but that's not helping Heat fans sleep easier at night, especially with the losses piling up.

The entire reason Giannis wanted out of Milwaukee was that he desired a better shot at making a title run again. Well, the Heat are 3-6 and sit ninth in the Eastern Conference. Yes, it's early, but Miami's roster doesn't look up to par. Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo are a bad fit. Klay Thompson and Tim Hardaway Jr. aren't bringing the shooting the team needs. Bobby Portis has regressed.

There is still time to turn things around, but it's not looking good. The Milwaukee Bucks, on the other hand, suddenly have a nice mix of young talent, draft capital, and upcoming cap space that could be useful in making meaningful roster moves next summer. They aren't perfect, but perhaps all of that, paired with the fact that it's where Giannis' journey started, is enticing.

Giannis could take a page from Dame's book

Giannis saw firsthand a superstar experiencing something new only to return home as soon as they could. In 2023, Damian Lillard requested a trade from Portland, where he had spent his entire career. While he thought he was seeking greener pastures, Lillard clearly missed Portland during his time with the Milwaukee Bucks from start to finish.

Shortly after being cut loose by the Bucks, Lillard bolted back home and is currently playing well for the Trail Blazers like he did for so many years. If the Heat keep struggling and don't make the type of late-season run Giannis has longed for, perhaps the Greek Freak will start to miss Milwaukee in the same way and contemplate his future. There's no place like home.

It all depends on how Giannis reacts when the Heat place that lofty extension offer on the table.
