Currently employing a point guard rotation consisting of a pair of 25-year-olds and a 23-year-old, the Milwaukee Bucks are showing a lot of faith in their young floor generals. They had been linked to vets early in the summer, but after Cole Anthony signed his deal, all has been quiet. It appears the team is content to roll into the season with these three leading the way.
Bucks rolling with their young point guards
Milwaukee has committed to a youth movement this summer, and they are seemingly sticking with it. Despite past interest in Chris Paul and Marcus Smart, two savvy, well-recognized point guards, those pursuits seemed to quiet down when Anthony signed. Other free agents like Malcolm Brogdon and Russell Westbrook remain out there and ready to ink a deal. Yet, the Milwaukee Bucks aren't budging.
They appear just fine with their three-headed unit of Ryan Rollins, Kevin Porter Jr., and Cole Anthony. It's a major change after so many years of either Eric Bledsoe, Jrue Holiday, or Damian Lillard running the point, but it's a necessity. This team needed more youth, speed, dynasticism, and athleticism at the point guard spot, and they got it. Now, it's time to see how they do with more responsibility.
The fascinating thing about this particular trio is that they are all very different players. Porter is the bucket-getter who will likely start and could be Milwaukee's second scoring option. Rollins is a jack of all trades and the best defender of the bunch. Anthony is an offense-first player, but he can also lock in at times and make a real impact defensively. That versatility will be such a welcoming addition.
While it's unlikely, the Milwaukee Bucks could still add a veteran this summer. Depending on what they do with Andre Jackson Jr., they could have an available roster spot. Would signing Brogdon be the worst move just because he's older? No, he could be a fine veteran. However, management has sent the message that youth will be the lead orchestrators, and they likely won't change that.
The Milwaukee Bucks don't have to tell the world they believe in their young point guards. They keep proving it with each passing day by not signing a veteran who could steal minutes from them just for the sake of name recognition. The Milwaukee Bucks of the past would have pounced on the opportunity, but this is a new squad with a new philosophy.
