Milwaukee Bucks fans are pleading for AJ Green to get more involved in the offense. While he is now a starter and is heaving a career-high 6.4 triple tries per game, it feels like he could be producing at a much higher level, especially considering he is shooting 52.9 percent on those 3-point attempts. One simple-sounding solution could be drawing up more handoffs for the marksman.
Handoffs could be the key to getting Green more involved
Perimeter shooters love handoffs. Ask Stephen Curry, who is the league-leader in points off handoffs this season with 36. They generate great looks, especially when players like Curry have big bodies in front of them to block shooters, such as Draymond Green and Al Horford. AJ Green could find himself in a similar position in Milwaukee with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Myles Turner.
Yet, the handoff hasn't been in the cards for Green much. He is shooting 5-of-9 (55.6 percent) when the opportunities have presented themselves early this season. That feels incredibly low for one of the emerging 3-point threats in the entire NBA. The next evolution for Green, aside from defense, is finding ways to get up more shots, and this could be the perfect route to take.
The Milwaukee Bucks toyed with using handoffs to get Green more shots last season, but they were not a constant occurrence. He shot 30-of-67 (44.8 percent) on such shots in 2024-25. With a bigger role and more confidence, there is no reason to believe he can't shatter those numbers. It just needs to be hammered home. Getting Green more of these looks should be a goal for Doc Rivers.
Right now, Green's numbers are good. His 12.3 points per game have comfortably surpassed his old career high. However, considering Green is leading the league in 3-point percentage among those to attempt 50 or more triples, it goes without saying an uptick is in order. In an offense built around floor spacing, there is no reason Green cannot get up 10 attempts a night.
AJ Green doesn't have to be Stephen Curry, but nine attempts off handoffs is far too few. The guard is already breaking out, but if the team wants to add fuel to the fire, one experiment could be staring them right in the face. Whether it starts with Green being more aggressive or Rivers drawing up the play, the Bucks must get their sharpshooter more involved.
