An eventful first day of free agency might just be setting the tone for the Milwaukee Bucks with the suggestion that they could be prepared to meet with Dwyane Wade next week.
The Milwaukee Bucks might just have one of the biggest surprises of this year’s free agency up their sleeves.
After a busy opening day for the team that saw them reach agreements with both Mirza Teletovic and Matthew Dellavedova, many Bucks fans could have been forgiven for thinking that was almost the end of the team’s free agency activity.
With all but a couple of spots filled on the roster, re-signing Miles Plumlee and picking up a cheap wing would have seemed like the most that could be expected of Milwaukee, but recent reports suggest they could be far from done.

Future hall of famer and former Marquette Golden Eagle Dwyane Wade has been said to be growing increasingly restless at the reluctance of the Miami Heat to pay him what he feels refelects a just salary, and now it seems like Wade is preparing to take meetings.
Having been referenced on multiple occasions in tweets from Bill Simmons over the past 24 hours, the news became somewhat more official when Brian Windhorst of ESPN added his contribution to the Wade rumors.
With the Miami Heat having tied down Hassan Whiteside to a big money contract earlier on Friday, and Chris Bosh still locked in on a big money deal in spite of uncertainties due to his health, the Heat have been reportedly eager to bring Kevin Durant to South Beach too. In terms of the finances, that creates a significant challenge when it comes to fitting in a major deal for Wade.
Of course, there are multiple considerations that should be noted with these rumors.
First of all, this could very well be posturing from Wade and his representatives to ensure that he gets the kind of deal that he feels he deserves. It wouldn’t be the first time, as Wade employed similar tactics last year to negotiate a one-year extension with the Heat.
Then from Milwaukee’s perspective, there are a whole host of questions too. Before Wade’s fit with the team could even be considered, the Bucks would have to figure out how they plan on clearing space to make a deal a reality.
Greg Monroe would be the first name that springs to mind in terms of a player that could lead to significant salary reductions, without impacting the core pieces in place in Milwaukee.
Monroe has been expected to be on the move for months now, but with no takers yet, where do Milwaukee send him? If Wade was the return (in a roundabout way), I’m not sure they’d mind dumping him for little or nothing, but that’s not to say that they’ll find a team who wants to facilitate that deal in a hassle free manner.
If Wade was to land in Milwaukee, what would that mean for the team’s timeline? How would that affect the roles and responsibilities of the “Big Three”? Are we seeing an ownership who are willing to push to win sooner rather than later, and maybe even approach the luxury tax in the coming years?
These are all pressing concerns, but I’m not sure if any of them would be enough to turn the front office off the idea of adding Wade to the organization.
Jason Kidd and the ownership have discussed their desire to bring big names to Milwaukee in the past, and they don’t come much bigger than one of the biggest stars ever to emerge from a Wisconsin college basketball program.
Wade may now be 34 years old, but he remains one of the league’s very best players.
He could provide a young team and some burgeoning stars with the type of veteran leader that they’ve been desperately lacking and he could teach them what it takes to win.
Perhaps more importantly above all of that, for an ownership group who has just invested considerable funds in a state of the art new arena, he could energize a fan base with a box office name in the run up to, if not even for when opening night in that new building eventually rolls around.
With meetings still to take place, it’s a long way from that point yet. What if Bill Simmons was right though?
