Wisconsin Herd: Who will the Herd pick in the G League expansion draft?
By Ti Windisch
The Wisconsin Herd have an expansion draft coming up. Who could end up on the team after Wednesday?
The Wisconsin Herd have just two players thus far: Bronson Koenig and Jalen Moore. The Herd will have some more players (or at least the rights to them) after Wednesday, when the G League expansion draft will be held.
As always, the guys over at 2 Ways & 10 Days have everything G League covered in great depth, including a mock expansion draft. We’ll look at who fake Herd GM and friend of Behind the Buck Pass Chris Reichert has the Herd taking in a moment, but first it’s necessary to explain a bit about this expansion draft.
Just two players can be taken from each G League team, severely limiting the player pool. Also, many, if not most, of the players selected will not play for the team that picks them, as many of the guys not protected by their current club will head overseas rather than stick around in the G League. Still, teams retain their rights for two seasons, meaning there’s value in the hope of that player coming back.

There are four teams picking in this expansion draft: The Herd, the Erie BayHawks, the Memphis Hustle, and the Agua Caliente Clippers. The Herd pick third, and the draft order reverses each round, meaning Wisconsin picks second in the second round, third again in the third, and so on.
The expansion draft has 11 rounds. Teams can skip a pick, but if they do they forfeit their selections for the rest of the draft. Now, on to the fun stuff.
Chris has Greg Whittington, Perry Ellis, Marquis Teague, Darington Hobson, J.J. O’Brien, Egidijus Mockevicius, John Jordan, Brannen Greene, Paris Bass, Terran Petteway, and Nate Robinson being selected by the Herd. For more on those dudes, go read this article on 2 Ways & 10 Days then come back.
The short version is that Chris is smart and these are super fun picks, a few of whom have Bucks ties. Instead of talking more about them, let’s look through some other players who will be eligible for this expansion draft who the Herd could take.

Jorge Gutierrez is there, and although he’s old for G League standards at 28, he’s a hell of a player in that league, and I’ve been fond of him ever since his all-too-short Milwaukee Bucks tenure. With the state of the Bucks at point guard right now, the NBA club might actually need him again at some point this season.
Jordan Crawford, another 28-year-old, does not have Bucks ties, but he’s super fun. So is Jimmer Fredette, who probably never would come to the G League, but shooters shoot, right? Ronald Roberts had committed to play on Milwaukee’s Summer League team before signing overseas, and giving him a shot to play with the Herd would make sense, although he might not come over either.
From these few examples and much of the writing included in the 2 Ways & 10 Days piece, it’s clear the politics of the G League expansion draft are vastly different than those in the NBA Draft.

Finding the sweet spot of players who are both worthwhile and who will actually play for the G League club is difficult, but it’s what Dave Dean and the Wisconsin Herd will have to accomplish with little time for preparation, considering Dean was hired on July 1.
