Wisconsin Herd: Three assistant coaches among new Herd hires
By Ti Windisch
The Wisconsin Herd announced five new hires on Friday afternoon, including three assistant coaches.
Three assistant coaches, a coaching associate, and a video coordinator were announced as the newest hires by the Wisconsin Herd on Friday afternoon. Near the end of last week Herd head coach Jordan Brady said his staff would be expanded soon, and seven days later his words have proven prophetic.
Steve Payne, Justin Wetzel, and Jamaal Benjamin are the three new Wisconsin assistant coaches. Payne is coming from a scouting position at EV HOOPS, and prior to that he was an assistant coach to a few collegiate teams.
Wetzel has been a head coach at the high school, collegiate, and professional level. Most recently he was the head coach at Dickinson State University, but he’s also worked in the Continental Basketball Association as a head coach. Benjamin was most recently a coaching associate with the Los Angeles Lakers, and has worked in the G League before.

Brian Butch was named as a Herd coaching associate as part of the announcement. Butch is an Appleton native who played in Japan last season and is Appleton West’s all-time leading scorer. He brings experience from both overseas leagues and the G League to the Herd staff.
Finally, Jordan Martz was named as Wisconsin’s video coordinator. He most recently served as an assistant video coordinator at Creighton University, and will carry that work over to the Herd this coming season.
As part of a press release announcing the moves, Brady acknowledged the variety of experiences his new staff have had across several different leagues.
"“Steve, Justin and Jamaal bring vast basketball experience, which will serve the Herd well in our inaugural season,” said Herd Head Coach Jordan Brady. “Brian’s career as a player in the NBA’s minor league system, at the University of Wisconsin and abroad is another great asset for our staff and players.”"

Now that the coaching staff is set, the biggest need left for the Wisconsin Herd is players. That will be addressed partially during Milwaukee Bucks training camp, and also at the G League Draft on October 21.
