In their first official game as a franchise, the Wisconsin Herd mounted a successful comeback over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Monday night.

The Wisconsin Herd certainly rang in their first game with some fireworks as they stormed back to defeat the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Monday night, winning 115-113.

Save for the opening minute of the game, the Herd were fighting an uphill battle from the get-go as the Vipers, specifically swingman Troy Williams, caught fire from beyond the arc in the game’s opening minutes. Eventually, the Herd peeled off a run of their own not long after Williams’ scoring outburst to stem the tide, and reach a more attainable deficit at the end of the first quarter.

After recapturing the lead for a brief moment at the start of the second quarter, a lack of effectiveness and sloppiness set in for the Herd, leaving the Vipers to strike and build up their lead midway through the period.

But again, the Herd battled to stop some of the bleeding and prevent the Vipers from building their lead even further as they trailed by 12 heading into halftime.

Coming out for the second half, things were at their lowest for the Herd as the Vipers were the aggressors to start the third quarter and built up their lead by as much as 20 points.

While they were down, the Herd were certainly not out as they showed some signs of life near the end of the third and more importantly, started to put their sloppy play behind them.

As soon as the fourth quarter started, the game began to gradually shift as the Herd found their footing and peeled off a run of their own, bringing the deficit down to single digits midway through the period. Before long, the Herd were able to even up the game, setting the stage for a back and forth affair for the final few minutes.

Trading clutch bucket after clutch bucket, the Herd looked to be in the clear up 1 with 6.3 seconds to go after a reverse layup from Brian Williams. But the Vipers were able to draw a foul near the basket on the following possession and recaptured the lead with 1.9 seconds to go, thanks to Demetrius Jackson sinking both free throws.

With enough time to get off a clean look, Jarvis Summers inbounded the ball to Xavier Munford, who ran to the corner behind the three-point line and buried the game-winning three to seal the Herd’s first historic victory.
