The Wisconsin Herd closed out their inaugural road trip with a win over the Reno Bighorns, moving to 3-1 on the season.

When it was revealed that the Wisconsin Herd would spend much of the first month of their opening season on the road due to the construction schedule of their new arena, most expected the kind of struggles that come with being an expansion team to be further amplified for the Herd.

Through four games and their first road trip, the opposite has proven to be the case for the Bucks’ Oshkosh based affiliate, though.

The Herd capped off their inaugural road trip with a 106-102 win over the Reno Bighorns on Saturday night in Nevada, and moved to an impressive 3-1 win on the season overall.

Jordan Brady’s team could possibly have been forgiven if Saturday had proved to be a bridge too far after a full week of travel, and coming on the second night of a back-to-back following a blowout loss in Santa Cruz. Although the Herd started slowly, they showed their resilience in surging back, and in truth never really looking under threat even though the score remained close without.

Having trailed by 13 points at the end of the first period, a 40-21 second quarter saw the Herd head to the half time interval with a six-point lead.

With key players still missing for a variety of reasons, Brady continued to experiment with his starting lineup. On this occasion, Gracin Bakumanya got the start at center, and Xavier Munford moved back into the backcourt as Jarvis Summers got the nod at small forward.

Bakumanya provided very solid minutes at the 5, with an active 10 points and seven rebounds on 5-6 from the field in just 23 minutes.

JeQuan Lewis provided a much improved performance with 15 points off the bench, while Gary Payton II and Summers chipped in with double digit tallies too.

The undoubted star of the show was Munford, though. The 25-year-old knocked down two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to effectively close the game, and round out his own 31-point showing.

Reassuringly, even as the Herd’s offense stuttered late, they were able to rely on their defense to close out the game and pick up yet another win.

Let’s take a closer look at the key details, performances and takeaways from the Herd’s latest victory.
