Fit with the Bucks

When it comes to evaluating Williams’ theoretical fit with the Bucks, or any big man in this year’s draft class, the same questions keep coming to mind about why that would be in the Bucks’ best interest.

As I wrote about when looking at Mitchell Robinson late last week, the long-term solution at the center position remains an unresolved one for the Bucks. Each one of John Henson, Thon Maker and Tyler Zeller are all rotation pieces, but for a variety of factors, tabbing either one of them as the starting 5 still stands as a stopgap solution at this point in time.

Of course, Maker is the one who has the ability to change that if his performance in this year’s playoffs is any indication, but we’ve yet to see that version of the 21-year-old consistently in the regular season.

Should he be available when the Bucks are on the clock at 17, which might be a fair question at this point, Williams doesn’t wholly solve that equation in his current form.

He certainly possesses plenty of athletic qualities that make him a tantalizing prospect from the Bucks’ perspective, judging by their past first round selections (Williams would be an ideal candidate on #TeamAllLength).

But considering the ideal role that would be best used to flesh out his game further, Williams likely won’t have the skill set that would make for a worthy partnership for a team centered around superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.

At 17th overall, Williams could stand as a talent that’s too good to pass up for the Bucks and they could look to make it work from there, though it does bring up other questions with what the future holds for their other bigs. But at this point, adding a center of Williams’ potential through the draft shouldn’t stand as the highest priority for the Bucks.
