Milwaukee Bucks 2017-18 Season Review: John Henson
Summer focus and final grade
With his own season coming to an unfortunate early end as he missed the Bucks’ last five games in their first round series with the Boston Celtics as a result of lower back tightness, it was an unceremonious note for Henson’s capable campaign to end on.
Of course, Henson’s absence in the postseason opened up the opportunity for Thon Maker to find his playoff form for the second straight season, which boosted the buzz surrounding the seven-footer after what had been a disappointing sophomore season.
Add in Tyler Zeller, who the Bucks picked up a few days before the trade deadline at the start of February and showed to be useful for stretches during his two-month introduction to Milwaukee.
All of this makes for an uncertain mix for sorting out the pecking order between the Bucks’ big men on the team’s depth chart. It’s obviously one of many questions the Bucks’ front office and new head coach Mike Budenholzer will have to sort out over the coming weeks and months as they look to forge a path towards lasting success.
As it relates to Henson more specifically, the North Carolina product is still under contract for the next two seasons after locking down a four-year, $44 million rookie contract extension at the beginning of October 2015.
Barring a trade surfacing, the expectation should be to see Henson back with the Bucks when training camp rolls around in mid-to-late September.
Where Henson slots in, how his health checks out and if he’s able to build on some of the form he established for long stretches this season is anyone’s guess at this point, sticking true to how his six-year long stay with the Bucks has shaken out to this point.
