Summer focus and final grade

For the second straight offseason, Jennings’ future in the NBA and more specifically, Milwaukee, stands in uncertainty.

As ESPN’s Bobby Marks noted in his piece focusing on the Bucks’ offseason, Jennings’ deal holds a guarantee date on July 1, which is worth just north of $2 million. Based on the nature of how he was called up to the Bucks in mid-March, the expectation should be that the Bucks will go ahead and elect not to guarantee Jennings’ salary and thus, making him an unrestricted free agent.

What his prospects hold in the NBA should that move come to pass is anyone’s guess at this point.

The big question as it relates to Jennings is whether he’s shown enough to teams around the league that he can fill a role as a third or even fourth guard, all at a veteran minimum price. Not only that, but will teams be content to bring a player of Jennings’ quality during the summer or during the season next year if/when injury strikes their backcourt.

With all the time he’s spent getting his mind and body right, which obviously helped him land an opportunity to get back in the league by way of the Bucks, it feels harsh to say Jennings’ efforts to rehabilitate his wayfaring career aren’t quite done just yet.

But unless a team is willing to take a chance on him once the free agency period opens, further trials look to be in store for the 10th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft as he continues to fight for his place in the league, one that looked to be an absolute certainty once upon a time.
