The biggest wildcard of any non-lottery-type prospects, Zhaire Smith might be the most prototypical prospect for the Bucks within this range, when considering their past archetypes for first round picks.
Smith burst onto the scene this year at Texas Tech University after being an unheralded recruit throughout high school.
Following his breakout season, one where he ended up being named to the Big 12 All-Defensive Team and ended up going to the Elite Eight in this year’s NCAA Tournament with the Red Raiders, Smith chose to ride the wave by declaring for the draft a year earlier than was originally expected by various draft pundits.
It’s easy to see why that is as Smith holds a magnetic mix of physical tools and athleticism, which makes him one of the most athletic players in the draft and a tremendous, versatile defender.
The big question around Smith is that his skill set on the offensive end remains a mystery at this stage in his development and it’s undetermined whether he’ll be capable of fulfilling a more modern role for a player of his position over his time on the NBA level.
But it’s understandable why teams would be allured by Smith based on the potential he possesses and for a team like the Bucks that has been accustomed to taking big swings in the middle of the draft, it could be a pivotal pick should he harness the majority of it.
