Milwaukee Bucks request waivers on Shabazz Muhammad

The Milwaukee Bucks have moved a step closer to finalizing their regular season roster as they requested waivers on Shabazz Muhammad on Thursday afternoon.

The final makeup of the Milwaukee Bucks’ regular season roster may still be undecided, but at the very least the team moved a step closer to making that decision on Thursday afternoon.

In the first roster move since the start of preseason, the Bucks announced that they have requested waivers on forward Shabazz Muhammad.

Muhammad first joined Milwaukee back in March, as the Bucks searched for depth and a scoring boost off the bench heading into the final stretch of the regular season and beyond into the postseason.

Prior to the playoffs, Muhammad played in 11 games, averaging 11.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game on 55.2 percent from the field, and 37.5 percent from three-point range. That included notable performances against the Bulls (21 points) and Magic (22 points), as Muhammad led short-handed Bucks teams to important victories.

From there, Muhammad also worked his way into Joe Prunty’s playoff rotation. The 25-year-old appeared in four games against the Celtics, scoring 11 points in both Game 2 and Game 4.

That was enough to earn Muhammad the opportunity to compete for another deal with the Bucks. After signing on September 22, Muhammad appeared in the Bucks’ games against the Bulls and Thunder, but logged a Did Not Play – Coach’s Decision in the game against the Timberwolves in Iowa.

The decision to move on from Muhammad leaves the Bucks with 17 players, excluding their two-way players, on the team’s training camp roster ahead of their final exhibition game at home to Minnesota on Friday.

Following a stellar performance against the Thunder on Tuesday, the incumbent Tyler Zeller will have renewed hopes of holding his spot heading into the season, while strong preseason play from Tim Frazier and Christian Wood also leaves the Bucks’ front office with tough decisions to make.

Those decisions could ultimately include seeking a trade to make room to retain multiple of those players, while waiving D.J. Wilson could also present as a possibility if the Bucks opt to keep two of Zeller, Wood and Frazier.
