Milwaukee Bucks will reportedly pick up options for Thon Maker, D.J. Wilson

According to numerous reports Tuesday afternoon, the Milwaukee Bucks will pick up the fourth-year option for big man Thon Maker as well as pick up the third-year option for resvere forward D.J. Wilson.

In the midst of their undefeated start to the 2018-19 NBA season, the Milwaukee Bucks did some housekeeping Tuesday afternoon.

First reported by Matt Velazquez of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Bucks plan to pick up the fourth-year option for Thon Maker’s rookie contract as well as picking up the third year of D.J. Wilson’s rookie contract.

Both Chris Haynes of Yahoo! Sports and The Athletic’s Michael Scotto confirmed the news on Maker and Wilson’s options mere seconds later after Velazquez’s original report.

Starting with Maker, it hardly comes a surprise that the Bucks have opted to pick up the fourth-year option on the big man’s rookie contract.

Despite the inconsistencies that have plagued his stint in Milwaukee so far, the flashes he has shown, primarily in each of the Bucks’ last two playoff runs, has kept hope alive regarding his potential and place in the Bucks’ foundation.

While playing time has been limited for the 21-year-old so far this young season, the news of Maker’s fourth-year option getting picked up comes after his 11-point performance in the Bucks’ victory over the Toronto Raptors Monday night.

What stood as a mere formality for Maker doesn’t look to be the same for Wilson as the decision to pick up the second-year forward’s option may come as a genuine shock to Bucks fans for multiple reasons.

For one, the bulk of Wilson’s playing time has come through in the G League while on assignment with the Wisconsin Herd or in each of the Bucks’ last two Summer League trips to Las Vegas.

What’s more is that there was some speculation Wilson was in danger of potentially being waived during the Bucks’ preseason where they sorted out their final roster before the start of the 2018-19 season.

That speculation continued after Wilson survived the roster cutdown as Keith Smith of Yahoo! Sports reported last week during his roundup of outstanding rookie contract options that the former Michigan Wolverine was “among the more likely candidates to have his option declined.”

Having just 71 total NBA minutes to his name at this point, Wilson’s inexperience at the NBA level clouds over his individual development and will likely see many more assignments up to Oshkosh as the season unfolds to get the playing time he needs to season his game.

With those decisions soon to be on the books, nothing hangs over the Bucks at the moment, leaving all of us to continue swooning and crossing our fingers to seeing this wonderful start to the season last much longer.
