After a busy few days at training camp, let’s take stock of what people are saying about the Milwaukee Bucks heading into preseason.

Welcome to the very first edition of Milwaukee Bucks News, a new column you can expect to find semi-regularly here on Behind the Buck Pass!

Once or twice a week, Milwaukee Bucks News will see us drop in on some of the wider discourse and buzz surrounding the team to weigh up what’s being said, and what you need to see, hear or read related to the Bucks from other corners of the internet.

The hope is it will frequently bring readers something new, or at the very least help you to catch up on some of the more interesting or noteworthy Bucks snippets you might have missed throughout the week.

So without further ado, let’s get into it!

More from Bucks News

With preseason opening at the United Center against the Chicago Bulls on Monday night, we’re currently riding high in what’s essentially peak optimism season. Between Monday’s Media Day and all of the glimpses that have been offered up of training camp at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, Milwaukee’s players coaches and execs are clearly in buoyant mood.

That sentiment may have been best summed up by Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry, as reported by Matt Velazquez of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in his detailing of the press conference held by Lasry, Jamie Dinan and Mike Fascitelli on Friday. Along with sharing their own optimism, addressing the decision to let Malcolm Brogdon walk away, and touching on recent tampering fines, Lasry astutely noted: “The great thing about before you play a game is everything is fabulous.”

Of course, while that may be the case from inside the organization, it doesn’t necessarily apply to the view of the Bucks from everyone on the outside. One notable example of that comes in the form of ESPN’s Zach Lowe. In his annual breakdown of all 30 NBA teams divided by tiers, Lowe offered the Bucks their due respect by placing them in the top tier assigned to “Top title contenders”. Still, Lowe did voice some apprehension about the Bucks’ prospects, attributing his “pangs of anxiety” to how the Bucks may ultimately decide to replace Brogdon’s minutes in the rotation.

Among the things that Eric Nehm of The Athletic noted in considering what we’ve learned from the Bucks’ training camp was that although there’s set to be a lot of competition for minutes at shooting guard, it seems at this point that Wesley Matthews is the clear frontrunner to take the starting spot.

Something else we learned this week was how exactly Kyle Korver, another prime contender for minutes at the 2, came to sign with the Bucks. In conversation with Matt Velazquez for the Journal Sentinel, Korver relayed a chance encounter and series of subsequent workouts with Giannis Antetokounmpo that convinced him that making the move to Milwaukee would be the right call for him.

If for some reason you need any further convincing as to why to watch the Bucks this season, The Ringer’s Tyler Parker made a compelling case by taking an obtuse and humorous look at five of Milwaukee’s players. If you can read the Brook Lopez and Robin Lopez segment without both laughing and getting incredibly excited about what the Bucks’ season will be like, the Charlotte Hornets might be the team for you.

Sticking with the more light-hearted to wrap up, earlier in the week, Donte DiVincenzo, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, and Cameron Reynolds took an exceptionally jumpy tour of the haunted houses at the seasonally revamped Fear District at Fiserv Forum.

Let’s just hope they’re braver on the court this season.
