AJ Green had a good showing in the season opener against the Wizards. He finished the game with 11 points on efficient shooting in just his ninth career start. Green will take on a bigger role this season after signing a recent contract extension, and he seems ready for it, just like Bucks fans said he would be.
AJ Green: Bucks permanent starter?
Although the Bucks were matched up with the lowly Wizards, it was still a big night for the team. Khris Middleton returned to Milwaukee, and the Bucks debuted their new-look starting lineup. It was Green’s first start of the season, and likely won’t be his last.
Green was very efficient as the Bucks dismantled the overmatched Wizards. He shot 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range to make the most of his opportunities. Green was able to relocate for open shots within the flow of the Bucks' offense.
He’s really the perfect role player for a high-volume shooting team, especially with a superstar like Giannis. Green is terrific at converting any slight advantage into a made three, and he’s also an off-ball playmaker with his unselfish movement. The Bucks' offense is definitely better when AJ Green is in the game.
Defensively, there were some concerns that Green could be a liability in a three-guard lineup. But he performed admirably there, too. The Wizards are far from the most potent NBA offense, but they do have seasoned veteran scorers in Middleton and CJ McCollum who can exploit weaknesses in a defense. The fact that neither was able to take advantage of Green is an encouraging sign.
Green is a disciplined defender who maintains good position against any offensive threat. He was primarily guarding young point guard Bub Carrington in this game and limited him to 11 points. Even when switched onto bigger players like Alex Sarr or Kyshawn George, Green forced them into tough shots rather than easy layups.
The one nitpick of Green’s defense would be his fouls. He finished the game with three fouls, which is acceptable for his overall playing time, but he had two quick ones in the first quarter. The Bucks have a bigger role slotted for Green this season, as evidenced by his 27 minutes in this game compared to an average of 22.7 last season. But early foul trouble can limit his ability to stay on the court.
Overall, AJ Green is well on his way to proving his value as a Bucks starter. He’s a good contributor on both ends, especially offensively, and a fantastic team player. His season debut showed that he can handle bigger minutes while keeping up his production and efficiency.
