Since being drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2024, AJ Johnson has had no stability, being traded countless times despite only playing two seasons. Now, the well-traveled guard, who is currently on the Memphis Grizzlies, could be on the move once again, as HoopsHype's Michael Scotto says that Johnson is not expected to be on the team to start the season.
Johnson better not unpack in Memphis just yet
The Grizzlies clearly don't view Johnson as a key component of their guard room after acquiring him in a trade with the Dallas Mavericks earlier this summer. They clearly want to see what players such as Scotty Pippen Jr., Walter Clayton Jr., and Ty Jerome can do. With other guards like Jahmai Mashack and Javon Small in town, Johnson is the odd man out.
Another trade could be in Johnson's future. Scotto notes that the Grizzlies and Pelicans have talked about a deal involving Johnson and Jordan Hawkins for salary purposes. Yet, Scotto notes that the Grizzlies have been in contact with several other teams about Johnson as well. They would clearly like to find a trade partner rather than cut him.
At this rate, it would be surprising if he ever played a game for the Grizzlies.
Johnson's career has been defined by trades
Since the Milwaukee Bucks surprisingly took him in the first round of the 2024 draft, Johnson has never been anywhere long enough to enjoy anything more than a quick cup of coffee. During his rookie season, the Bucks traded him to Washington. Last season, he got traded to Dallas. This offseason, the guard is heading to Memphis. Soon, he will be elsewhere.
That type of frequent movement for such a young player—Johnson is still just 21—can be taxing. How can he show his potential when he doesn't have anywhere to call home for more than several months at a time? He can't, and it's among the reasons he will likely not be ready to contribute in a rotation for several years.
The best thing for Johnson would be be cut so that he can choose his next destination. He needs to find a team that is a good fit for him. After constantly being trade bait, the best thing for the guard's career would be to land on a team that has a legitimate need for another ball-handler. Then he could have his chance to show that he's more than just a trade chip.
