Bucks dug their own grave with self-imposed Giannis ultimatum

Telling him to decide on his future before useful moves can be made was bold.

There has been a lot of chatter about Giannis Antetokounmpo leaving the Milwaukee Bucks but not much about him staying. Why? Well, largely because part-owner Jimmy Haslam said the team wants the Greek Freak's future sorted out by the NBA Draft. That doesn't give them much time to tweak the roster, only intensifying Giannis' potential desire to head elsewhere.

Bucks need to upgrade but are stuck

"Giannis, just trust us. We will definetly make a stronger roster than what you had last year." That is what the Bucks are essentially asking of Giannis by telling him to decide by the draft whether he is open to staying or not. Sure, the team could make a trade to beef up the roster, but free agency will not start for several days after, so there would still be plenty of questions.

After the last few years—especially last season—ended in disaster, it appears Giannis is not willing to blindly trust Milwaukee. If he asks out, it will be because he doesn't have faith that the front office can do what is needed to put a contending squad around him. For a superstar who just wants to win at all costs, there would be so much risk in just trusting the front office to get it done.

Rather than giving him a deadline somewhere around mid-July, which would give the Bucks plenty of time to make moves, they want this done sooner rather than later. If Giannis asks for a trade, it could very well be because the Milwaukee Bucks weren't willing to wait.

Bucks want answers, and rightfully so

The Milwaukee Bucks are justified in wanting Giannis to make up his mind soon. He isn't eligible to sign an extension until October, but they certainly can't wait that long to make up his mind. If they dragged this saga out throughout the entire summer, looming targets wouldn't know what to think of Milwaukee as a landing spot due to the uncertainty of Giannis.

Once Giannis has decided on a pathway, the Milwaukee Bucks and any targets they have interest in through the draft, free agency, or trades can be sorted out. Whether it's with or without Giannis, the Bucks appear ready for whatever comes next. They just want clarity on a saga that has dragged on far longer than they would have liked.

The next few weeks will be a crucial period for the future of the franchise, and Milwaukee's demand for a draft-day response could spark a major shift.
