Bucks' Gary Trent Jr. mystery is moving toward a confusing end

It sounds like he will stick around despite the team having an assortment of guards already.

Once the NBA season ended, Milwaukee Bucks fans assumed Gary Trent Jr. would be one of the first players out the door. Well, not so fast. Trent remains unsigned in free agency, but rumor has it that he could surprisingly be back in Milwaukee soon enough. NBA insider Jake Fischer discussed the rumor about Trent returning to the Bucks on a Bleacher Report livestream.

"There's been a lot of talk behind the scenes of [Gary Trent Jr.] sticking around in Milwaukee. Kind of waiting to see what that outcome is."

Re-signing Trent would be a wild move

You know what the Milwaukee Bucks don't need right now? Another guard. The backcourt is already overflowing as is after the Caris LeVert trade. A lot of that depth is due to young players like Kasparas Jakucionis, Ryan Rollins, Brayden Burries, and Kevin Porter Jr., who should all have roles and not have their time hindered by older players, such as Trent, in this new era.

Re-signing Trent would only be all the more perplexing after the season he just had. It was one of his least productive outings yet, averaging just 8.1 points while shooting just 38.7 percent from the floor. That is the player the Milwaukee Bucks are eager to have back and potentially hand a significant raise to? It would be hard to justify, especially depending on the financial figure.

Bucks' best Trent outcome is clear

If Trent does return, he'll be given a chance to redeem himself while also immediately becoming trade bait. Plenty of teams would love to have Trent due to his solid perimeter shooting and pesky defense, and if he's playing well next season, they could look to acquire him from Milwaukee before the NBA Trade Deadline. That would help the Bucks clear out this backcourt logjam.

One bad season—especially on a Milwaukee team that was full of dysfunction from top to bottom—does not make Trent a bad player. This is someone who averaged 18.8 points and 2.6 steals in the NBA Playoffs just over a year ago. He can still be a productive player. The problem is that he would only further clog the backcourt while earning a raise after a down year.

Conversations are certainly taking place behind the scenes. Despite his poor 2025-26, the Bucks seemingly still think Trent can help them in this Giannis Antetokounmpo-less era. Nothing is official just yet, but Fischer's reporting suggests a resolution is nearing.
