Bucks are making it much easier to justify keeping Tyler Herro

If the Milwaukee Bucks have two off-ball combo guards in Rollins and Burries, keeping Herro makes more sense.

The Milwaukee Bucks are exploring Tyler Herro trade scenarios, but there is a world where they keep the Wisconsin native. With both Ryan Rollins and the recently drafted Brayden Burries alongside him in the backcourt, that would be an interesting decision. Known to have defensive deficiencies, pairing Herro with either Rollins or Burries could help bring the best out of him and justify keeping him.

Herro needs a defensive guard next to him

Herro will never be known for his defense. He's a tremendous offensive player at times, but he has a difficult time holding up on the other end. The best way to lessen that concern—if the team does plan to keep him around—would be to surround him with as many stout defenders as humanly possible. Think about what the title-winning New York Knicks just did with Jalen Brunson.

Rollins and Burries would both provide immediate support in that regard. Rollins took strides on both ends this season, but his offensive leap overshadowed his defense, which some in Bucks circles went as far as to say was All-Defensive level. Coming into the NBA, Burries has room to grow, but if he can bring the same level of intensity to that side of things as he did in college, he will be in good hands.

Pairing Tyler Herro with either guard could allow him to focus more on offense and take the weaker matchup on the other end. Perhaps that could be the key to helping him once again reach All-Star status as he did with the Miami Heat.

Bucks have a Herro decision to make soon

The Milwaukee Bucks must decide whether they value Tyler Herro or the assets they could get for him more. NBA insider Marc Stein reports that the Detroit Pistons are among teams talking to the Bucks about Herro, especially now that the Los Angeles Lakers have taken Austin Reaves off the market with a new contract extension.

If the assets are too good to pass up, sure, take them. However, if the offers are lacking, especially as Detroit can't offer the draft pick they just used, the Bucks should be fine keeping Herro. Start the new era with a backcourt trio of Herro, Rollins, and Burries. See how well those three play off one another and go from there. They have the potential to be a strong trio. The Bucks should be in no rush here.
