The Milwaukee Bucks have started handing out training camp invites, with John Butler Jr. being the first player to earn a deal. In the coming weeks, the team will certainly extend a few more to younger players they think are worth a closer look. In that case, it wouldn't be surprising if they brought in an experienced but still younger former NBA guard in B.J. Boston Jr.
Boston caught some eyes in Summer League
Like Butler, Boston joined the Milwaukee Bucks for Summer League. His playing time was all over the place, but when he did see time, Boston played decently well. As one of the more polished players on the roster—he has four years of NBA experience—he looked comfortable, averaging 9.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, and an assist per game while hitting 42.9 percent of his triples.
Though not the most eye-popping numbers, Boston showed enough for another look. It would be a low-risk move to bring him aboard and see what he has in the tank, especially considering his newly-formed chemistry with other Bucks Summer Leaguers like Kasparas Jakucionis, Brayden Burries, Kam Jones, and more.
Still just 24 years old, Boston would fit in seamlessly with Milwaukee's newfound youth movement.
Bucks could keep Boston around as depth
The long-term plan for Boston would be clear following a camp invite. If he were to do enough to stick around, the Milwaukee Bucks wouldn't be able to hand him a two-way deal like they could with Butler, as Boston has too many years of NBA experience. A standard contract is also certainly out of the cards right now, as Milwaukee is loaded in the backcourt and has an overflowing roster already.
Instead, they could look to keep him in the state by bringing him aboard their G League squad, the Wisconsin Herd. There, he could show his talents on a greater scale as he attempts his comeback, giving teams more stateside tape to watch. If he were to play well enough there, someone could call him with an offer of a roster spot.
It's a steep hill to climb, but it's possible. Ask Terrence Davis, the former standout Herd alum who was a great addition to the team before being called up to the NBA by the Sacramento Kings.
Of course, this is all speculative. There is no telling how the Milwaukee Bucks feel about Boston, but it would make plenty of sense to bring him in for camp.
