Bucks will offer Tyler Herro path to redemption no other team could

He has the opportunity to be a top option on his hometown team. If that doesn't motivate him, there is no telling what would.

Tyler Herro's image around the league isn't great right now. After an injury-riddled 2025-26 season that saw him post some of his least-productive numbers in several years, the new Milwaukee Bucks guard has plenty of doubters. Yet, Herro now has a golden opportunity to start fresh in his home state of Wisconsin with a significant role.

Herro is embracing his new opportunity

Playing for their hometown team is something athletes either love or hate. It adds pressure, knowing that you are representing the place you grew up.

Herro falls into the former category, as he could not be more thrilled to return to his roots. In an interview with the Miami Herald's Anthony Chiang (subscription required), Herro said he figured he would be traded this summer and that "I’m excited and happy it’s Milwaukee.” That's been obvious considering he's been rocking Bucks apparel in every picture and media post after the trade.

This should immediately serve as a shot in the arm. There is more pressure, sure, but Herro seems to be embracing it. It likely helps that the guard is currently looking like Milwaukee's top option, a role he never had with the Miami Heat. With the ball in his hands more than ever before, Herro can show the world what he's capable of and that he not only can still play but that he has new heights to reach.

A successful 2026-27 season outlook

Individually, it wouldn't be surprising in the slightest if a healthy Tyler Herro was named an All-Star. He already earned the nod in 2024-25, so it's not like he hasn't been in that discussion before. That year, he averaged 23.9 points on 17.9 field goal attempts per game. Both of those previous career highs should be broken with the Milwaukee Bucks this coming season.

From a team perspective, Herro could send a rousing message if that type of productivity propels the Bucks into the postseason picture. With how low the rest of the NBA seemingly sees the Bucks, with a lot of power rankings placing them near the bottom, this team making the playoffs or even the Play-In could be a massive wake-up call. Herro will undeniably play a key part in that.

There is no telling how the Milwaukee Bucks feel about Tyler Herro long-term. However, at least in the short-term, they are about to offer him what a lot of players dream of in the form of a prominent role on the team he grew up rooting for. With a contract extension looming, the ball is in Herro's court, and he is seemingly embracing it.
