The Milwaukee Bucks made their biggest trade in years this summer. They sent Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat in exchange for some players and a bunch of picks. One of the players they got back was Tyler Herro. He was the biggest piece that went back to Milwaukee in the deal, but they should learn from the contract that the Cleveland Cavaliers gave James Harden.
Cleveland just handed Harden a three-year, $97 million contract after completing a trade for Peyton Watson. But it also has a player option in the final year of the deal. It’s not an amazing contract, and the Bucks should avoid giving Herro a deal like it (even though he will probably want even more than Harden got). He's on an expiring contract.
As Milwaukee looks to navigate its future with all of the new assets it got back in the Antetokounmpo trade, the contract they eventually decide to give (or not give) Herro will be important.
Bucks should not pay Tyler Herro like the Cavaliers paid James Harden
Herro has been an integral part of the Heat’s success for years. In his rookie season, he helped the Heat make the NBA Finals in The Bubble, though they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Two years ago, Herro even made the All-Star team. He’s in the prime of his career, and in the right situation, he could really help a team win at the highest level.
Unfortunately, the Bucks aren’t in that right situation. They have just entered a new rebuild. The post-Antetokounmpo era. They aren’t going to be competing for championships anytime soon.
Because of that, paying a guy like Herro doesn’t make too much sense, especially with how much money he’s going to want. Trading him could be smarter for the Bucks.
Let’s say Herro would want a deal similar to Harden’s. Just over the $30 million mark. That would probably be a bit too rich for the Bucks, who should want to maintain financial freedom.
Herro may even want to try to earn more money than that on the open market. He may look at the contract Austin Reaves got and feel as though he should earn that much (over $40 million).
Regardless of whether you’re looking at Harden or Reaves’ contract, the Bucks should not give Herro that type of deal. He’s just not the type of player Milwaukee should be paying a lot of money at this point of their rebuild.
Paying Herro that much shouldn’t be in the Bucks’ plans.
