Taylor Jenkins is the Milwaukee Bucks new head coach. Now, their attention changes to superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and what his future looks like as a busy offseason gets underway.
Giannis' future next up on Bucks to-do list
Doc Rivers announcing he was leaving his role as head coach added more to the Bucks' objectives to tackle this offseason. They moved swiftly to bring in Jenkins as they clearly felt they may lose him with multiple teams in the first round of the playoffs eyeing coaching changes, so the front office got their man early. All attention turns back towards Giannis.
Every Bucks fan knows that Giannis loves the city of Milwaukee, and it is clear how much it means to him, despite the constant media chatter around where his next destination is. All season long, there has been very vague messaging out of the Greek Freak's camp, which has made it difficult to really understand as a fan base what is going on.
However, Giannis has already said this offseason that he wishes he had done more to quieten the rumors, and it had a clear impact on the Bucks this season. Bobby Portis spoke about how it impacted the locker room and his teammates not knowing if their leader would be on the roster, making it difficult to focus on competing to get the team back into the playoffs.
Jenkins spent a year as a Bucks assistant, so he may have a relationship already with Giannis, but it is unlikely to be anything significant. He does have a proven track record of working with a young team and progressing them to the playoffs, so if Giannis does leave, then Jenkins can still fit the Bucks' direction. If Giannis stays, then Jenkins is a good enough head coach to put together a game plan around the two-time MVP and steer the Bucks back into the postseason.
Giannis and the Bucks need to move swiftly
A new head coach will want to know who he will be coaching next season, and the future of Giannis will have a massive knock-on effect on how the roster is built. If he is traded, the likelihood is that the majority of the roster will be out the door as the Bucks tear it all down and look to rebuild. The saga has gone on for too long, and new stories drop every day, so it becomes tiring to talk about.
With the NBA Draft in a matter of months, the Bucks would also want to know which direction to pursue with their pick, or whether to trade it.
The longer it drags on, the worse the noise will get and the harder it will be for Jenkins as he looks to formulate his ideas into a plan for how he wants his Bucks team to look. One foot in, one foot out messaging won't suffice anymore; it is in the best interests of everyone to have this ordeal sorted sooner rather than later.
A new head coach is here. Now, all eyes remain on Giannis and his future, as it's a huge domino for what the Milwaukee Bucks do in the draft and in their roster construction.
