Immediately after the 2025 NBA Draft concluded, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported that the Milwaukee Bucks would be signing Alabama's Mark Sears to a two-way contract. The undrafted guard will now join a Bucks depth chart that is incredibly thin at the moment, especially at point guard, where he will play.
Bucks add a point guard, a spot they need help at
The Milwaukee Bucks have no clear-cut answers at point guard. Damian Lillard will miss a good part of next season due to his Achilles tear. Ryan Rollins will be a restricted free agent. Kevin Porter Jr. is inevitably going to decline his player option to hit the open market. The team needs someone to run the point next season. Sears likely isn't that on a full-time basis, but he's at least a depth piece.
Sears, a three-time All-SEC honoree, definitely comes with some intrigue. During his final two years at Alabama, he averaged 20.1 points and 4.6 assists while shooting 38.6 percent from deep on 6.5 tries per matchup. He's a legitimate offensive weapon, capable of making shots and finding his teammates from all sorts of angles. The Bucks could use that - at least as depth - with Damian Lillard out.
Of course, Sears is far from a perfect prospect. Perhaps the reason he landed in Milwaukee's lap as an undrafted player was due to his height. With shoes, he comes in at 6-foot-1. Again, that's with his shoes on. In today's NBA, there are small guards who succeed, like Jalen Brunson, but there are more who don't make it because they are easy targets defensively.
If Sears can find a way to translate his scoring punch to the NBA level, there may be a spot for him at some point. For now, he's a fine two-way pickup for a Milwaukee Bucks team that has no shortage of decisions to make at the point guard spot. Sears will have his chance to make a splash when the Bucks hit the court for Summer League very soon here.
Sears isn't the answer to Milwaukee's roster predicament at point guard, but on a two-way deal for a team depleted at his position, this is about as low risk as it gets. The Bucks picking up Sears should come as no surprise, given that they worked him out this year and last year. Milwaukee got their guy.
