For months, the narrative in South Beach has been locked in: Miami is the destination. The dream of a Giannis Antetokounmpo-Bam Adebayo duo has been the center of Heat culture's way forward. But if the latest reporting out of The Athletic is any indication, that dream might be hitting a catastrophic reality check.
Miami could no longer be the frontrunners for Giannis Antetokounmpo
According to Sam Amick and Eric Nehm of The Athletic (subscription required), the two-time MVP would actually be “willing to sign the four-year, $275 million extension," which would mean that Boston now poses a “serious threat to the Heat’s pursuit.”
"Celtics star Jaylen Brown is widely believed to be the most prominent player who would come the Bucks’ way in that deal, though rival teams expect that Milwaukee would trade the 29-year-old forward again for younger players and draft picks," The Athletic also wrote.
Miami has been the big name coming up most consistently in Giannis trade conversations in the past few months. Their fascination with the idea of adding Antetokounmpo next to Bam Adebayo has been an open secret around the association for a while now. And for a time, they were genuinely considered to be the front runners: Miami can match assets. Miami can offer Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and draft capital. In short: they've been doing everything right on paper.
Giannis has been pretty vocal about his desire to stay in the Eastern Conference, too, but he also reportedly has a lot of questions about just how intact that Miami roster would still beland after absorbing a trade for him. And that gives Boston another opening to landing him: Jayson Tatum would give the Greek Freak a better chance to compete for a title than, say, Adebayo and Norman Powell.
The Celtics lost in the second round this past season, finished with question marks, and are still, per the most credible reporting available right now, the destination Giannis actually wants. But the climate in the league oscillates by the day. Case in point: the Orlando Magic have flip-flopped twice now over whether or not they actually want GA, but recent reporting by Sam Amick says they're back in the mix.
The Heat need to ramp up their chase if they still want Giannis in South Beach
For Miami, this is a worst-case scenario that they should be taking seriously. If the Celtics enter the fray with the willingness to gut their depth for a superstar, they instantly leapfrog the Heat in the hierarchy of potential landing spots. It’s no longer just about who can offer the best picks; it’s about who can offer the best future.
There are ways to keep the Bucks interested, of course. Milwaukee would no doubt be enticed, for instance, if Miami dangled its No. 13 pick in the upcoming draft in any trade for Antetokounmpo. Being able to choose two lottery picks would go a long way in helping the Bucks rebuild right away. The point is, there are other things an organization like the Heat can offer.
