Heat's next insistent phone call as Giannis race intensifies is clear

If the Pistons are willing to trade a first for Tyler Herro, things get interesting.

For a while, it felt like the Miami Heat would cruise to a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade without much competition at all. Well, suddenly, they find themselves in a dog fight. With the Boston Celtics still in the hunt and gaining traction, Miami needs to make a stronger offer fast. To create an even stronger offer for the Milwaukee Bucks, Miami should be begging the Detroit Pistons for help over the phone.

Herro to Detroit makes sense all-around

No one could fault the Milwaukee Bucks for not wanting Tyler Herro. While he's a fine player, he is also 26 and would not fit snugly into a rebuilding timeline without Giannis Antetokounmpo. Ideally, the Heat could reroute him to an entirely different team to hoard even more assets to give Milwaukee. One of those teams could be the Detroit Pistons.

Herro does fit the mould of what Detroit needs this summer. As mentioned in his latest article, Marc Stein (subscription required) mentions that sharpshooters like Trey Murphy III and Kyrie Irving are on the Pistons' radar. If both of those options never materialize, perhaps Detroit could pivot to a player like Herro, who would fit snugly on a team that needs as much perimeter shooting as it can get.

Miami should be doing as much convicing as it can to get Detroit to cough up assets for Tyler Herro.

What the Bucks could ideally get here

Above all else, the 21st pick in this upcoming draft is the key piece here. With Jake Fischer reporting that Milwaukee could be on the hunt for as many as three picks in the first round, Miami could make that dream a reality by giving Milwaukee 13 and 21, in addition to the Bucks already having 10. That would likely get the wheels turning on a blockbuster Giannis Antetokounmpo deal.

As for players, Detroit would likely want to offload Caris LeVert, which would be fine, given that he is set to play on an expiring contract next season. The true prize would be if the Pistons were willing to part with Ron Holland II or Isaiah Stewart. If the Heat could convince the Pistons to give up either one of them and that first-rounder, their Giannis odds would suddenly skyrocket, one would think.

There is no telling how Detroit feels about Tyler Herro. Maybe they don't think he's worth a first-round selection. Miami better hope they do. If not, they need to spend the next several days seeing if there is anyone out there who does. Otherwise, the Boston Celtics just might steal the Greek Freak from them in the blink of an eye.
