Bucks' new signing creates intriguing training camp battle
By Dalton Sell
With their standard roster full, the Milwaukee Bucks have spent the past few weeks filling out their available training camp spots.
They recently added both James Akinjo and Liam Robbins via Exhibit 10 contracts, giving them an opportunity to join the Bucks for camp before sticking around with them in the G-League if they're indeed waived after camp. They've now added another player to that list, bringing in Ibou Badji, per HoopsHype NBA insider Michael Scotto.
Ibou Badji, Liam Robbins and Anžejs Pasečņiks could spar in Bucks camp
Badji is the third 7-footer the Milwaukee Bucks have signed this offseason. The first was towering Latvian Anžejs Pasečņiks, who inked a two-way deal with the team. Then came Liam Robbins, who joined on an Exhibit-10, as mentioned. Depth behind Brook Lopez and Bobby Portis was a concern for the Bucks heading into the offseason, and they now have three other 7-footers in tow.
Given that he is on a two-way deal versus an Exhibit 10, Pasečņiks sits atop the roster hierarchy with these three. However, that doesn't mean his spot on the roster is safe, as two-way slots come and go constantly. If one of the other two impresses, the Milwaukee Bucks will notice. All three players will be fighting to prove their place throughout training camp in the coming weeks.
No matter how camp goes, all three players are tied to the Milwaukee Bucks one way or another. The likeliest outcomes involved all three suiting up for Milwaukee's G-League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, regularly throughout the upcoming season. That will give them all an opportunity to develop and work on their craft as they eventually aim to leap onto an NBA roster.
It also won't hurt having the opportunity to call on any of the three if the Milwaukee Bucks needed a depth piece at center.
Circling back to Badji, he's no stranger to Wisconsin. He's had two separate stints with the Herd over the past several seasons, and he mostly recently joined the Bucks for Summer League. Due to that familiarity, it makes sense for the Milwaukee Bucks to bring him in for camp and likely stash him with their G-League team for the upcoming season.
Time will tell if the Bucks are done loading up their roster with fresh talent ahead of training camp or if general manager Jon Horst has more moves up his sleeve.
