George Hill, Jeff Teague, Jevon Carter, Goran Dragic, Cameron Payne and Patrick Beverley are all backup point guards the Milwaukee Bucks have employed over the past few seasons.

What do they all have in common? They're all a bit undersized at the point guard position, with the tallest of them all being Goran Dragic at 6-foot-4. Outside of him, they're all 6-foot-3, while Carter is just 6-foot-1. Over the years, the Milwaukee Bucks, coincidentally, it seems, have gone after these smaller guards to run the bench, but that has now changed with one of their latest moves.

The Delon Wright signing breaks a yearly Bucks' tradition

By signing Delon Wright on the second day of 2024 NBA Free Agency, the Milwaukee Bucks have added a backup point guard who stands at 6-foot-5, breaking the tradition of relying on backup floor generals who are in the 6-foot-3 and below range.

The most prominent example of an undersized guard coming back to bite the Bucks was Hill back in the 2022 NBA Playoffs. He was feasted on by the big wings of the Boston Celtics, who hunted him due to them having a major size advantage. Hill was also injured, but still, the point stands that an undersized guard can oftentimes get taken advantage of on defense.

The advantage of having a bigger guard like Wright is that it will be harder for these opposing wings to track him down and hunt him defensively. He has the height and length to put up a better fight in situaitons where opposing scorers are hunting for a better matchup. The guard will immediately help the Milwaukee Bucks beef up their perimeter defense in this regard.

With the Milwaukee Bucks recently signing Gary Trent Jr. to complete their 15-man standard roster, Wright can currently be penciled in as the backup point guard unless another move is made to shake up the roster as it stands. Until then, Wright stands as the tallest backup point guard the Bucks have employed in a long time, which is a rather exciting change for the franchise.
