Rumors had been swirling that the Milwaukee Bucks were in the market for a new shooting guard, and they just reeled in the biggest fish in the pond.
According to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Bucks have signed Gary Trent Jr. At the time of the signing, Trent was the best free agent left out on the market, so this is obviously a massive new signing for the Bucks and one that fills a massive hole in the backcourt.
What Gary Trent Jr. brings to the Milwaukee Bucks
The Milwaukee Bucks just found their starting shooting guard. Prior to this, there hadn't been a clear answer as to who would take the role. Now, they have a 6-foot-5 sharpshooter who will fit right in with the other stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard and Khris Middleton. On impact, Trent may be the best shooting guard this team has had in quite some time.
Speaking of Lillard, he certainly had a hand in this. The guard was rumored to be recruiting players to Milwaukee, and he certainly called his former teammate in Portland. Now, the two guards will reunite in their quest to win an NBA championship.
Despite having little to no financial flexibility, the Milwaukee Bucks have done a great job with their roster retooling this off-season. Trent, Taurean Prince and Delon Wright are three newcomers who all fill roster needs and have experience. Getting them all cheap is tremendous work by Jon Horst and the rest of this front office.
It'll now be interesting to see what else the team does. The Athletic's Shams Charania (subscription required) had reported that the Bucks were holding a workout this week to get a look at players, one of which was Will Barton. If the Bucks were to make a trade to free up a roster spot, they could bring in one of the attendees if they desire. Just because the roster is full does not mean they're done yet.
Only time will tell if Horst has any other tricks up his sleeve.
