With an open two-way slot, the Milwaukee Bucks should be monitoring training camp cutdowns for players who could fill it. Rob Dillingham, who was recently cut by the Charlotte Hornets, would make plenty of sense for the job, though Milwaukee's backcourt jam could turn some off to the idea. Well, the thought would be to have him guide the ship in the G League, rehabbing his value there.
Herd have undergone changes
The Wisconsin Herd, G League affiliate of the Bucks, has undergone sizeable changes this summer. In addition to bringing in a new head coach, they have parted with Stephen Thompson, Mark Sears, and Kira Lewis Jr. All were important pieces to the team last season, meaning there will be plenty of touches and opportunities up for grabs on this new-look squad.
That's where a player like Dillingham could be an interesting pickup.
While the guard hasn't lived up to the hype surrounding him going eighth overall in the draft just a couple of years ago, the potential is still there. He's not even 22. After being traded twice and cut once, the best thing for his career is to land somewhere that will prioritize his development. While Milwaukee wouldn't do that with the main squad, they could send him to the G League.
With the Herd, Dillingham could play a significant role and polish his game. The Milwaukee Bucks have made it clear that they will promote internal talent if they are deserving, and Dillingham could be their next success story. At the bare minimum, he's worth a look, considering he went eighth overall just two summers ago and showed flashes with the Chicago Bulls near the end of last season.
Dillingham would add to Bucks' guard crunch
The Milwaukee Bucks don't exactly need another guard right now. The backcourt is loaded, with their assortment of guards taking up over half the roster alone. Beyond the standard contracts, they have a pair of guards on their current two-way contracts as well in Kam Jones and Cormac Ryan. Adding yet another could certainly be controversial.
Yet, as they ponder who to sign with their final two-way contract, the Milwaukee Bucks should be on the hunt for talent above all else. While another center wouldn't hurt for depth purposes, adding one more guard wouldn't be the end of the world if the upside is there. Former eighth overall picks aren't available every day, so the Bucks should at least poke around and see if he's up for it.
