The Bucks will be in a desperate position this summer, but might find a way out by dealing with the Rockets. Houston seems headed for a first-round exit this season and could be desperate enough to exchange some of their young talents and upcoming picks for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Bucks have been in a standoff with Giannis over his future, but trading him to the Rockets could help everyone: it gives the Bucks pieces for a rebuild and allows Giannis to join a potential championship contender.
The Rockets could be the perfect Giannis trade destination
Rumors about Giannis trade suitors will inevitably heat up again as the offseason approaches. But perhaps none are better suited to satisfy the Bucks and Giannis himself than the Rockets. They went all-in on this season after trading for 37-year-old superstar Kevin Durant last summer, but are unlikely to win a playoff series.
The Rockets have been ravaged by injuries to key veterans such as Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams this season, but their time is running out to contend with KD regardless. Sacrificing some of their young talent for an immediate upgrade in Giannis could be the best route for the Rockets to ever win a title in the foreseeable future.
And the name that piques the Bucks' interest the most will definitely be Amen Thompson. Thompson has already made a name for himself in his third season as a defensive juggernaut, despite his limited offensive game. Putting him next to dynamic young scorers like Ryan Rollins would be a great foundation for the next era of Bucks basketball.
A Giannis-Amen trade could be a win-win
On the Houston side of things, Giannis could slot right into Amen's current role. Offensively, he's usually deployed in the dunker spot or cutting to the rim. Of course, Giannis is arguably the most devastating weapon in basketball in those exact situations. Amen also occasionally runs the offense as a pseudo point guard, another area where Giannis excels for someone with his size and finishing ability.
The Rockets are clearly lacking another true offensive threat that can take their team to the next level. Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun are solid players in their own right, but not enough to elevate the team given the offensive deficiencies elsewhere. Adding Giannis to that team, especially with his playmaking ability, could be the missing piece.
Importantly, it also gives Giannis a legitimate chance to win a title in a leading role. He'll be bringing a new team to glory that hasn't won a championship in over 30 years. And at the same time, the Bucks could get a blue-chip prospect back in Amen Thompson. That sort of return will keep Giannis from getting any ill will from Bucks fans and make this a perfect match.
