1 Sequence from loss to Cavaliers gives Bucks blueprint to turn things around
By Dalton Sell
For the second consecutive game, the Milwaukee Bucks lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a meeting that came down to the closing moments.
While the loss undoubtedly stings, especially as the Bucks had a late lead, one silver lining from the loss is that Doc Rivers finally fully embraced this team's need for youth. With most of the veterans on the roster struggling, Rivers did exactly what fans have been pleading for and gave the young Bucks extended minutes, even throwing two-way combo guard Ryan Rollins out there.
Rolling with youth, which helped get Milwaukee back in the game, should be a priority looking ahead, and there was one particular stretch that highlighted this.
The Milwaukee Bucks' youth showed their importance
With 8:18 left in the fourth quarter, as the Bucks led by four, Cleveland's Sam Merrill drove to the rim and put up a shot. He was swatted by sophomore Andre Jackson Jr. Fellow youngster Ryan Rollins got the rebound and tossed it ahead to Jackson, who then found AJ Green, who sunk a 3-pointer from several feet behind the line.
Here it is in its entirety:
High-energy play like this is exactly what the Milwaukee Bucks have been missing all season long. Two of the team's issues have been their lack of athleticism needed to defend and their perimeter shooting. Jackson and Green showed in this one sequence alone that he could help the Bucks in these two areas more than countless other players on this roster have all season.
While the sequence was the highlight, these two made an impact on this game far beyond just those few seconds. Green, who has been out of the rotation lately, didn't take long to reintroduce himself, going 7-of-9 from deep, finishing with 21 points. Jackson did everything, finishing with seven points, seven rebounds, two assists and a block. This is the bench production the Milwaukee Bucks need.
Given his reluctance to give even Green and Jackson extended time, it was surprising to see Rivers go deep into his bench and call on a two-way player in Ryan Rollins. Yet, even in his six minutes, the young guard showed potential, staying active on defense while finishing with three rebounds, two points and an assist. He may need more minutes consistently.
The Milwaukee Bucks are 1-6 after this latest loss, and though things look bleak, all they can do is look ahead. One way to get out of this rut is to keep playing the young guns, as it's clear they have what it takes to help out. Given that they are both young players, mistakes are bound to happen, but even then, this team is in need of a spark, and these players can provide it.
