Tyler Herro could become Bucks casualty after awful Gary Trent Jr. contract

Could Gary Trent Jr. cost the Milwaukee Bucks Tyler Herro?

The Milwaukee Bucks signed Gary Trent Jr. to one of the worst NBA contracts in recent memory. He inked a four-year, $64 million deal, all of which is guaranteed. Now, during an appearance on Third Apron, Sam Quinn of CBS Sports has floated the idea of trading Tyler Herro as a way of clearing up the guard logjam. That would be a complete disaster.

Herro is an All-Star. He was the focal point of the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade. Moving him primarily to make room for Trent, of all players, would be a horrible idea. The Trent contract is terrible, and trading Herro to the Detroit Pistons would only make the issue worse. It would be a waste of talent.

Milwaukee should only trade Herro if the right package pops up. Not to clear a logjam with Trent.

Bucks cannot trade Tyler Herro because of Gary Trent Jr.

Trent had a bad season with the Bucks last year. He was inefficient and way less effective than he was in past years. There was a reason he was on a minimum contract.

Yet when the time came to sign him to a new deal this summer, the Bucks decided to hand him $64 million over four years for seemingly no reason. They just… gave it to him.

Immediately, speculation popped up that the Bucks and Trent had a handshake agreement last summer for him to sign a minimum and then get paid a year later.

As wrong and not allowed as that sounds (and is), it’s the only fathomable explanation for why the Bucks would give him the contract they gave him this offseason.

Now, the Bucks have Herro, Trent, Kasparas Jakucionis, Ryan Rollins, Caris LeVert, Brayden Burries, and Kevin Porter Jr. all on the roster. Most of those guys need minutes.

For developmental purposes, the Bucks should be playing Jakucionis, Burries, and probably even Rollins. And then Herro is the best player on their team. He needs to play.

But trading Herro for the sole purpose of clearing up the logjam that Trent created is ludicrous. Quinn’s idea isn’t the crazy part. The crazy part is that Milwaukee’s deal with Trent even happened, putting the Bucks in this situation.

The Trent contract is already one of the single worst moves of the summer, and perhaps even in recent memory. Compounding that mistake by trading Herro just to alleviate the logjam would be terrible.

Milwaukee cannot make that mistake with Herro. Not because of its Trent mistake.
